Conduct SYLFF Research at UC San Diego

The School of Global Policy and Strategy (GPS) at University of California, San Diego been a Sylff-endowed program for over 20 years. The Global Leadership Institute (GLI) in GPS attracts researchers and students from around the globe who benefit from a supportive educational environment as they work towards their educational and professional goals.  We would be grateful if you could share the information below with the Sylff Fellows at your University.

Since 2006 GLI has hosted 25 Sylff researchers representing ten different countries through the Fellows’ Mobility Program (FMP) and the Sylff Research Abroad (SRA) program, which currently supports Sylff Fellows to conduct academic research related to their degree dissertations at other institutions abroad. Research activities such as data collection, interviews, fieldwork, and consultations with professors of the receiving institution can be implemented under this program.

The Tokyo Foundation receives applications two times per year and provides a maximum of $5,000.00USD per successful applicant. The Sylff Office welcomes applications from Fellows who want to conduct in-depth research to enhance their degree dissertation. The award may be used to cover expenses such as international travel, tuition, visa fees, local transportation, insurance, living expenses, and research materials. Sylff Research Abroad Fellows receive 50% off our regular GLI tuition (one academic quarter of approximately three months is $4,150.00 which can be prorated for shorter stays).

January 9, 2017 is the next application deadline.  This is a link to the SRA call for applications.  Sylff will announce their selection outcomes by February 6, 2017 with disbursement of the awards on March 30, 2017.  Available GLI start dates thereafter include March 29, 2017 for the spring quarter, September 21, 2017 for the fall quarter, and January 4, 2018 for the winter quarter.

If you have any questions regarding the application or awards process please make sure to contact the Tokyo Foundation Sylff officedirectly.  If you are an awardee and are ready to start the application and enrollment process at GLI or have more questions regarding our program, please contact me at mthiveos@ucsd.edu

Please allow me to share a little information about Global Leadership Institute. Since 1989, we have provided an infrastructure for individuals seeking non-degree research and study. As a major research university, UC San Diego offers over 80 disciplines which researchers can access. As an SRA Fellow, GLI facilitates meetings with UC San Diego professors who have advanced knowledge in a student’s area of interest. SRA Fellows are given the opportunity to:

  • “Audit” one course per quarter with the permission of the professor
  • Consult with internationally renowned experts in a student’s academic discipline
  • Access multiple University departments
  • Attend lectures and special events including professional seminars and presentations
  • Utilize UC San Diego’s world-class libraries and resources
  • Obtain a University ID and UC San Diego email account
  • Participate in all GLI activities and social events on and off-campus

We look forward to welcoming students from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens on our campus. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Best Wishes,
Marie
